  • $59.99/year ($4.99/month)

My take

This is a wonderful set of apps for beginners who are looking to start an exercise routine or if you want to work out in the comfort of your own home at your pace. But be sure to have an accountability system in place so you can maintain a regular schedule and not let your health (and your subscription money) sit on the back burner.

I love the Down Dog apps because they always give me a different exercise routine. If I like a particular session, I can always save it and come back to it, but I almost never do because I really enjoy the variety in my workouts. I’ve been using the apps (Yoga, HIIT, and barre, in particular) for about 5 years now, and all my friends to whom I’ve recommended this also love Down Dog. Start with a free trial here.

3. Journal

best self care products journal

Overview

Journaling has been extremely helpful for me in so many ways. I not only record my thoughts, feelings, and reflections on each day, but I also plan out my daily schedule and look back on each week, month, and quarter. I don’t have a specific recommendation for journals, because I journal directly in my calendar app (more on this in a future blog post). But the features I’d recommend for your journaling practice are listed in the highlights below.

Highlights

  • Daily timetable or time-blocking/boxing section to plan out each day
  • A section for writing your daily thoughts and reflections
  • Weekly, monthly, and quarterly reflections
  • Space for recording any health-related data (blood pressure, body temperature, mood, etc) and other habits you want to work on

Pricing

  • Free (Calendar or Notes app)
  • Depends (on the journal or template you choose to purchase)

My take

Want to change a habit? Track it! Journaling has been helping me record my progress as I try to build better habits, learn new things, and use my time more effectively. I’ve been collecting data on myself and how I work, and the daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly reflections enable me to evaluate whether I’m making real changes in my life or if I’m just running in place.

Since starting to journal this way, I have become a lot more productive, feel less pressed for time, and am able to change both physical and mental habits.

Best Self Care Products on a Budget ($25 or less)

1. Immuni-Tea

best self care products immuni-tea

Overview

An immune-boosting blend of organic ginger, turmeric, and lemon juice powders. The ginger and turmeric are grown, harvested, and processed in the US, sweetened with organic panela and sugar. Just stir a tablespoon of the powder into a cup of water (can be cold or hot!) and indulge in the benefits.

Highlights

  • Helps remove inflammation and ailments in the body
  • Supports digestion
  • Boosts energy
  • Enhances immune function
  • No fillers or artificial ingredients, only 5 real-food ingredients

Pricing

  • $20.00 for 8oz bag

My take

This is an amazing blend that not only boosts your energy and immune system but also helps your body detox and flushes it of impurities. One bag lasts a surprisingly long time, and since starting to drink this pretty regularly in January 2023, I have not come down with any kind of illness, gotten an upset stomach, or felt bloated. And I was really impressed that this helped someone clear their bladder and even got rid of their craving for soda

2. Black Turmeric Powder

Overview

Yes, black turmeric! Pure, organically-grown black turmeric powder with a bit of black pepper to help your body absorb all the nutrients and benefits of turmeric. Black turmeric is prized in India as a potent medicinal herb and contains the highest curcumin content of any turmeric variety.

Highlights

  • USDA Organic
  • Grown in Florida, USA
  • Processed within hours of harvest to preserve freshness and potency
  • Rich in bioactive compounds and essential oils
  • Comes with a serving scoop and recipe card

Pricing

  • $25.00 for 0.5 oz jar (1-month supply)

My take

This has been like a magic cure-all, at least for me. The ACV, honey, and black turmeric powder tonic recipe they include with the jar really gives me an energy boost, so I’ve reduced my coffee intake significantly. I’ve also let the powder sit on some canker sores in my mouth (I get these often when I’m tired), and the sores healed 2-3 times faster than usual.

Other people I know who have been taking this have mentioned that it reduced pain, boosted their moods, and improved their skin. I wonder what this black turmeric powder will do for you!

3. Donggubat shampoo and conditioner bars

Overview

There are many shampoo and conditioner bars out there, but the ones from Donggubat (동구밭) are my favorite. They have minimal, natural ingredient lists and have a touching company mission: a sustainable life for both the non-disabled and developmentally disabled. More than 50% of their employees have developmental disabilities, and I’m so happy I can support their mission by purchasing their products.

Highlights

  • Vegan, plant-derived ingredients
  • Eco-friendly, plastic free, and zero-waste packaging
  • Minimal and space-saving
  • Easy to use

Pricing

My take

If you want shiny, healthy hair while supporting a great cause and being sustainable at the same time, Donggubat shampoo and conditioner bars are for you. I’ve been receiving tons of compliments on my hair since switching to Donggubat, and the friends to whom I’ve recommended these bars also love them!

Best Skin Care Products

1. Makep:rem Safe Me Relief Essence Toner

Overview

A super-moisturizing toner that soothes skin and protects the skin’s natural barrier at the same time.

Highlights

  • Carefully formulated with a minimal ingredient list
  • Vegan formula
  • Eco-friendly, recyclable bottle printed with soy ink

Pricing

My take

If you want a minimal skincare routine, this is the product for you. I love this toner because it’s so moisturizing that just a few layers of this are enough to keep my skin hydrated and moist throughout the day. After a few layers (I adjust based on the weather and how my skin feels), I finish off with sunscreen in the morning or just stop with the last layer of this toner at night.

2. Makep:rem Safe Me Relief Moisture Cream

Overview

A soothing cream that rejuvenates the skin’s natural barrier and locks in moisture.

Highlights

  • Carefully formulated with a minimal ingredient list
  • Vegan formula
  • Eco-friendly, recyclable bottle printed with soy ink

Pricing

My take

If you have dry skin, this will make your skin super happy. During the coldest winter months, my skin gets quite dry and itchy. Without this cream, I think winter might be absolutely miserable. This instantly calms my skin and locks in the moisture from the matching toner.

3. LabNo Cicaloe Relief Sun Milk

Overview

A moisturizing, mineral-based SPF 50+ PA++++ sunscreen that doesn’t leave a white cast and doesn’t dry out your skin.

Highlights

  • No chemical-based sunscreen ingredients
  • Cruelty-free, vegan-friendly formula
  • Moisturizing, lotion-like texture
  • Contains Cica (Centella Asiatica, aka gotu kola), which has healing and moisturizing properties

Pricing

My take

This is the perfect sunscreen for sensitive or dry skin. I searched a long time for a mineral sunscreen without chemical UV blockers, which sting my eyes. Every type I tried dried my skin out so much that I felt miserable within the first hour of applying it on my face.

Then came LabNo’s Cicaloe Relief Sun Milk to my rescue. I fell in love with it so much that I’m already using my 4th bottle and recommended it to all my friends who were in search of a good sunscreen for sensitive skin. They all love it, and I’m sure you will too!

4. Makep:rem UV Defense Me Sun Fluid

Overview

A generously-sized SPF 50+ PA+++ combination sunscreen (contains both chemical and mineral UV blockers) that also moisturizes and calms skin.

Highlights

  • Large 150mL (5.07 fl oz) bottle
  • Suitable for both body and face
  • Recently-updated formula with friendlier, more natural ingredients

Pricing

My take

If you’re okay with using chemical-based UV blockers on your face, this is great for both your face and body. I personally do not use chemical sunscreen ingredients on my face because they make my eyes sting, but this particular sunscreen feels wonderful on my body!

Best Self Care Products for Women

(Sorry, men. 😅)

1. DivaCup Menstrual Cups

best self care products divacup menstrual cup

Overview

A sustainable alternative to tampons that provides up to 12 hours of leak-free protection and will last many years with proper care.

Highlights

  • Made from medical-grade, latex-free silicone
  • Chemical, plastic, and dye-free
  • No need to buy tampons ever again
  • No concerns for TSS

Pricing

My take

These definitely have a learning curve, and you have to be comfortable getting messy and touching your own bodily fluids. But I think the benefits far outweigh these tiny inconveniences. I can’t feel it when it’s inserted properly, and I feel so clean throughout that time of month.

There are many alternatives out there, and I’ve tried a cheaper alternative because the stem was easier to pull out. But I switched back to DivaCup because the other one kept leaking, which is rarely an issue with the DivaCup.

2. Cloth sanitary pads

best self care products cloth sanitary pads

Overview

The ones I purchased on Amazon are made with bamboo layers and are a charcoal color that hides any possible stains. They have beautiful prints on the covering and are easy to fold up for carrying. I usually wear one of these with my menstrual cup, just in case, or on lighter days when I don’t want to use the cup.

Highlights

  • Surprisingly highly absorbent
  • No chemically-treated materials
  • Doesn’t create waste
  • No need to purchase disposable pads every month

Pricing

  • $12.99 for 6 light pads on Amazon
  • $13.99 for 6 medium pads on Amazon

My take

Regular sanitary pads always gave me painful rashes, so I tried many other brands with organic cotton covers. All of them were equally uncomfortable. I soon realized only the outer lining was organic cotton, while the inner layers were still chemically treated.

One day, a friend recommended that I try reusable pads, and I proceeded to purchase some on Amazon. I am so happy I did because I no longer deal with any kind of discomfort down there.

You do need to plan ahead somewhat and make sure to rinse out the pads right away so that they won’t stain or smell. But this little inconvenience totally beats having any kind of rash and spending on disposable pads every month.

What Is Self Care?

best self care products what is self care

Self care refers to any activity that helps improve your mental, physical, and emotional well-being. It can include things like exercise, meditation, skincare, or simply taking a break from work. The goal of self-care is to prioritize your own needs and take care of yourself first in the following areas:

  • Emotional
  • Mental
  • Physical
  • Social
  • Spiritual
  • Practical (financial, professional, education, environment, home, etc)

Conclusion

Especially during the pandemic, I realized that self care is not a luxury. It’s a necessity. We need to take care of ourselves so we can all be our best selves. An added plus to this would be the ability to help others as well instead of being a burden on them.

I hope this list of best self care products helps you find what works for you and makes you feel good. Remember to prioritize yourself, and let’s all make time for some kind of self care every day.
